Five critical domains where we conduct research and develop policy recommendations for Africa's digital future.
We examine how governments and institutions can manage digital transformation in ways that are inclusive, accountable, and aligned with constitutional values. This includes e-government, digital public infrastructure, and the governance of platform economies.
We develop Africa-centred frameworks for governing artificial intelligence — including algorithmic accountability, bias auditing, the right to explanation, and the regulation of generative AI and deepfakes in South African law.
We analyse South Africa's cybersecurity regulatory landscape, assess gaps in the Cybercrimes Act and related legislation, and develop recommendations for strengthening national cyber resilience and protecting critical information infrastructure.
We examine data localisation, cross-border data flows, POPIA implementation, and what it means for African states to exercise genuine sovereignty over their digital infrastructure and the data of their citizens.
We anticipate governance challenges arising from emerging technologies — including blockchain, the Internet of Things, biometric surveillance, synthetic media, and quantum computing — before they outpace regulation.
We welcome partnerships with academics, civil society, and government on our focus areas.
